Our Story
A legacy of leadership in aged care education
At Age Concern we are passionate about nursing, nurses,
other health care workers and advancing the care of elderly people through continuing professional development programs.
Since 1986 we have combined evidence based with innovative
programs to advance the quality of care to older Australians, wherever that care is delivered. We do have a special interest in the care of people diagnosed with a dementia.
Age Concern Pty Ltd was founded in 1986 by Prue Mellor, one of Australia’s pioneers in continuing professional development for nurses, allied health professionals, and aged care workers. As one of the first private providers in the field, Age Concern quickly became known for its innovative programs focused on improving care for the elderly.
In 2005, the company was gazetted as an Educational Institution, formalising its role as a leader in aged care education. Among our many achievements, we proudly pioneered Australia’s first standalone Postgraduate Dementia Program for registered nurses. This groundbreaking program was accepted as an elective at Latrobe University in 1996 and later recognised at master’s level by the University of Queensland, supporting nurses undertaking the Nurse Practitioner program with a dementia specialty.
Prue’s expertise has been widely recognised. She was invited to serve as a witness for the House of Representatives Inquiry into Indigenous Health, and selected as an aged care advisor for an international delegation to Brunei, led by former Senator Bill O’Chee.
Advancing dementia care through evidence-based practice
Age Concern has consistently driven evidence-based practice in dementia care. In 2017, Prue initiated the Harmony in the Bush research project, funded by the Commonwealth.
As Chief Clinical Investigator, she led the design and implementation of tailored non-pharmacological interventions, including staff training and music-based therapies, to minimise behavioural symptoms of dementia.
The project was a success, demonstrating the power of person-centred, non-drug approaches in aged care.
Today, Age Concern continues to provide professional development programs across Australia.

Continuing Professional Development - an investment or a burden?
Daily we see committed managers and nurses balancing fulltime work with family responsibilities and the ever increasing demands of the aged care industry. Managers are stretched between staffing, daily operations, head-office directives, and compliance with the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. Nurses are stretched between delivering personalised, contemporary clinical care, supervising care staff and the overwhelming amount of documentation for the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
Without relevant continuing professional development this may lead to:
Failure to meet accreditation standards risking compliance breaches and reputational harm
Tailored aged care CPD EDUCATION that’s personal, practical, and proven to deliver results.
Whether you manage a facility or work on the floor, our programs are designed to make your work easier, safer, and more rewarding.
