The aim

To advance nursing knowledge & practice to minimise & support behavioural symptoms of dementia incorporating practical, researched, non-pharmacological strategies for measurable outcomes

Prue was the proponent and clinician for the Commonwealth Government funded – Harmony in the Bush. Her speciality is guiding RAC staff to deliver care reflective of best practice, aligned with standards of the NMBA & the Aged Care Standards.

09.30–10.30 Neurocognitive disorders, the facts.

  • Criteria (DSM 5 TR 2022) Alzheimer’s, Lewy body, vascular and frontotemporal dementias.
  • The assessment process & support for losses across the six (6) cognitive domains.
  • Behavioural symptoms identified by attendees

10.45–12.15 The dementia symptom clusters

  • Personalising care for the symptom clusters of cognitive, conative, affective losses & BPSD.
  • Admissions and comorbidities, the issues!
  • Documentation to evidence contemporary nursing practice & legislation requirements.
  • When antipsychotics are not a restraint.

13.15-16.00 Documenting behaviour support plans

Step by step, we write personalised, comprehensive, supportive plans for residents, introducing effective, researched strategies, inclusive of possible cross-cultural issues.

Maximum attendees – 6 registered nurses

This is a small, interactive program, to better support individual learning. You finish the day with a prototype care plan that is personalised, wholistic and that includes researched strategies to minimise the behavioural symptoms of dementia.
Attendees are requested to bring unidentified details of a resident with behavioural symptoms of dementia.
